WINTER BROCHURE FOR PARENTSTHE END OF REMOTE LEARNINGWe would like to welcome back our grade 7 & 8 students and our K to 6 remote learners to in-class learning! We are very happy to see you once again! Student attendance to remote learning was truly remarkable. Congratulations to our students for their commitment during this time. The return to in-class learning follows the recent announcement by Manitoba Education and the RRVSD of the end of the temporary, two-week period of remote learning following the holiday break and the resumption of in-person classroom learning. Learning arrangements will continue to be made upon parent request for students who are required to remain in quarantine for short periods of time. We would like to thank families for their active engagement during this trying time of remote learning. We are grateful for your support and collaboration in the ongoing education of our students. DRUM FITTING OUR WAY TO FITNESS! Drumfit is a cardio-based drumming program combining physical activity with brain fitness. Students simply grab drumsticks and drum away to music on an exercise ball. The result? A fun filled PE class while increasing overall wellbeing. All the while students are having fun, their DrumFIT session is promoting both cardio and brain fitness! As simple as it may sound, keeping the beat along with the movement is a challenging task for all ages and can bring on quite the sweat. Drum fit is equally a great way to maintain a physical education program during the cold weather days. We would like to thank the Village Connection for their financial support in the purchase of the Drum fit equipment. Their generous donation has provided drum fit sets for our school and Héritage school.

On behalf of the school community, I would like to thank Reena Maynard, Renée Gentes, and Lindsey Davis for their time on the PAC, for their ongoing support of the school, and for their dedication and commitment to the students, staff, and parents of the ÉSMS community. The PAC meetings are scheduled for every 3rd Wednesday of the month with the next meeting being on February 17th. We are looking forward to working with the new Parent Advisory Council, discussing school based issues and collaborating on various projects. WEEK 1 OF 2021 COMPLETE! We have completed a good first week of 2021. We are taking advantage of the nice weather to enjoy the outdoors at school. Staying focused on the positives and making the best of a challenging situation, we look forward to a year of adventures and great memories with our students and our school community. We have also successfully completed another week of remote learning. We appreciate the efforts of our students, parents, and teachers who are endeavouring to make this work. Our student attendance has been much better than last spring's experience. We appreciate your efforts and we look forward to seeing our remote learning students on the 18th of January. During Remote Learning, we are using our Safe Arrival call out system to alert parents of any missed Google Meet sessions. If your student is going to be absent from a Google Meet, please use the Safe Arrival app to record the excused absence. This will ensure you are not getting an unnecessary call, email or text twice daily. HELPFUL RESOURCES FOR REMOTE LEARNING

PATIO GRILL THANK YOUA big thank you to the Patio Grill in Grunthal, and the family who sponsored a soup meal for our staff Thursday! The Patio Grill's Blessing Bag program is intended to thank local workers while building community. For more information you can contact them directly on instagram. Hoping that this new year each day is filled with contentment, opportunities, peace, and abundance. WELCOME TO THE NEW YEAR!During these first two weeks of return to school after the holiday break (January 4th to January 15th), we have moved into the provincially mandated remote learning period for grades 7 & 8, and optional remote learning for students in Kindergarten to grade 6. Our teachers, as always, will do their best to ensure a positive experience for all students. Remote learning can be challenging for some students and families; we understand and we are here to help. This learning approach also requires a great deal of individual and familial commitment. We believe the students will be most successful with an ongoing collaboration between home and school during this remote learning time. Prior to the break, your child’s teacher provided you with additional information about the planned remote learning period. We encourage students to maintain a regular home schedule while engaging in remote learning. Students will be required to “remote in” to their classes where appropriate and as determined by the teacher(s) in order to receive the lesson(s) in the classroom. Guidelines for instruction (eg: schedule) have been or will be shared with you by your child’s teacher. In addition to online classes, students will be expected to engage in independent activities based on the classroom goals. Assignments and assessment will be examined to reflect the remote learning situation. We value the relationships we have developed with our students and their families. We recognize the current conditions have placed a strain on many aspects of people’s everyday lives, especially school. We hope that together we help the students flourish as we know they would in normal circumstances. GOOGLE 101 FOR PARENTS & STUDENTSNeeding some help with all the Google Apps being used in remote learning? Dennis Wiebe from our divisional technology department has put together a how to video for parents and students who are new to Google. This may be particularly helpful for students on remote learning and for parents trying to support their child. Please check out the link for the Google 101 video. SPREADING CHRISTMAS JOYThe seniors at the Chalet Malouin smiled as they opened their handcrafted cards and read the Merry Christmas wishes written by grade 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 students. Both seniors and students had their hearts warmed and feelings of joy during a difficult pandemic Christmas season. Keeping the St Malo community connected and caring for each other through challenging times is so important to us all. We look forward to working together with the community again throughout the school year. WINTER COLD DAYS & INDOOR RECESS We have reached that time of the year where indoor recesses are needed in the event of cold weather conditions. When temperatures of -28 degrees, with or without windchill, are reached, students will spend their recess/break indoor. This includes during morning arrivals between 8:15 and 8:45 and Physical Education classes. Safety guidelines will remain in place during indoor recess. This includes students remaining at their desks or in their space, no walking around classrooms or hallways, keeping masks on. Students will be provided with quiet & relaxing activities to do. ÉSMS RECEIVES A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESSThank-you to our local community for their generous donations of treats to help celebrate the Christmas season for all K to 8 students. The treats were received with much gratitude and thanks from the students. A special thank you to Agnes & JP Gosselin, Anna & Gilles Maynard, Paulette & Victor Curé, Marie-Lynne & Gerald Catellier, and Lynne & Marc Goulet for these goodies. We would also like to thank parents and the local community for the kindness, words of encouragement, and thoughtfulness shared with staff during the month of December.
