ENJOYING THE GREAT WEATHER!A COMMUNITY OF WRITERSWhether daily writing in gratitude journals, writing sentences about their weekend, inventing twisted fairy tales, composing poems, exploring the P.E.E.L. writing process, or simply enjoying some free write time, on any given morning, students of all grade levels can be seen fully engaged in creating original pieces of work. Students are eager to share their writing, to have their words read and appreciated by others. Wednesdays during our morning announcement, we celebrate the authors of ÉSMS by sharing school wide the published works of our students. The whole school then celebrates the student authors by sharing the gems (great words, sentences, or images) of their writing. My heart dropped, my head got warm and I felt like I couldn’t move. The house was quiet as a grave and I heard the man coming up the stairs very slowly, so I wouldn’t hear him, but I could. I quickly got up, grabbed my knife and hid in my room. He made it to the top and stayed there for a couple of seconds and went into my dad’s room, a couple minutes later he finally came into mine. I was shaking like it was a cold winter. He checked under my bed, then my closet. Nothing. I was behind my door holding a knife ready for anything. He sounded scared, like he didn’t want anybody to know what he was up to. I left my hiding spot, I slowly came out from where I was and saw him waiting for me by the stairs… SOURCES OF STRENGTHIn Sources of Strength, grade 5/6 students are now exploring the brain and body connection through the analogy of a growing tree. Students have learned that the roots, like our brainstem, controls basic needs. This week we're learning that, like the trunk of a tree, our emotions present themselves as a reaction to the sensations our bodies are getting from our brainstem. Next week, we will learn all about how the decision-making portion of our brain is connected to the sensations and emotions we experience. On April 9, 2021, the Manitoba government announced that it is requesting applications from students (aged 14 to 18) across Manitoba to participate on the Manitoba Education Minister’s Student Advisory Council. The Student Advisory Council is one of the priority actions of the Better Education Starts Today: Putting Students First strategy. Council members will provide insights and advice to the Minister of Education regarding current and emerging topics and issues for Manitoba Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. The Student Advisory Council will be composed of up to 20 Manitoba youth, aged 14 to 18, who will report directly to the Minister of Education. Council members will serve a 12-month term starting in August 2021 and ending in August 2022. The deadline for applications is May 10, 2021 SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR |
