construction updatesIt is so exciting to see the progress made already in such a short period of time. Construction fencing has been installed around the perimeter of the work area and demolition to make room for the new build is already begun. These are the changes that will in effect: Busses: Our new bus drop off and pick up location will now remain on Chouinard Street (The arena road) until the end of the construction period. We would ask for your help in avoiding parking on Chouinard street during the hours of 8:15 to 8:45 and 3:15 to 3:45 to ensure safe arrival and departure procedures for the students. Closed off access: Maternelle North door is no longer accessible. Students can be picked up and dropped off at the school's main doors. Play ground access: All students have been relocated to the south school yard for arrival and recess times. Although staggered recesses have been maintained in order to accomodate space for both the Early Years and Middle Years to play, there are no cohort groups during break times. Families accessing the school playground after school hours will continue to have access to the South end of the yard (play structure area). We will continue to do our best to provide you with advanced notice of any changes affecting students (ie- busses/yard access...) understanding that sometimes construction projects have the unexpected or delays happen requiring last minute changes. Mme. Michelle's 3/4 class Sharing their aspirationsMme Michelle's class share their writing with us and have started buddy groups with 6E! Exploring the 5 senses in Mme Sydney's ClassTo finish off our unit on “The 5 Senses” we decided to get creative! Using various recycled materials students were asked to create something that would protect one of their 5 senses. Students made a variety of things including hats, sunglasses, goggles, ear muffs and masks. They are very proud of their hard work! M. Joël and M. Steve's 7/8s learning about modern agricultureGrade 7/8 students are using the design process in this Sciences Humaines project exploring effective uses of land. They are designing futuristic houses and yards. The students are learning about new practices such as vertical farming and other urban agriculture possibilities.
SPECIAL UPDATE- SCHOOL EXPANSIONThe construction of the new school expansion is on its way!
Starting Monday April 25th, PenCo will be installing safety fencing and staging their work trailers. This will impact our access to the North school yard, North gate entrance (by the gym) to the yard, as well as the school parking lot. The official construction start date is schedule for Monday May 2!! How exciting!! We will continue to operate with pre-established staggered times for am, lunch & pm breaks. Morning arrival and recess breaks will be in South schoolyard for all K to 8 students. (This will begin after 9am on Monday April 25th). As of April 26th, students arriving by bus will be redirected to the south end of school to make their way to the school yard until the 8:45 entry time. If you are dropping off your child at school we recommend that they be dropped off near the south gate entrance. For students walking to school, we would encourage them to use the South crosswalk to more easily access the south gate entrance. PARKING LOT ACCESS: The construction fencing will be closing off the North half of the school parking lot. Parking for staff, visitors, and parents will be moved onto St Malo main and adjacent streets. We are working on alternate arrangements for parking spaces in town. We would ask that all visitors and families dropping off or picking up students refrain from parking in the parking lot. The closure of North end of the parking lot will also have an impact on busing more so at dismissal rather than arrival. We will continue to use the parking lot for dismissals with a limited number of buses entering the bus loop at a time. We will continue with dismissal as established and will make adjustments as needed. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we move forward with this very exciting venture. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to communicate with the school administration- Julie Karatchuk or Steven Bellemare. Friday, April 29: Boston Pizza lunch Monday May 9: Gord Olson presentation for MY Thursday May 19: Grade 8 are visiting Heritage School Monday, May 23: Victoria Day. No School New VP Position AnnouncementDear families, I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Bellemare to the 0.5 Vice-Principal position at ÉSMS for the 2022-2023 school year. Steve was a former student of École St Malo School who began his teaching career here in 1996. He has taught for 25 years now, in 3 school boards across 2 provinces, experiencing different programming from early years to high school. Teaching has always been a passion of Steve's and he's very much looking forward to being part of our administration team at ÉSMS, bringing his experiences to his new position, and working with the school and the community. Our Maternelle to Grade 8 students from the Français program were fortunate to take part in a presentation by the Cercle Molière. The Compagnie Djarama presented "Petit Bout de Bois". We were excited for the opportunity to be together in the gym for the first time in a long time. A great big thank you to the Comité culturel de Saint-Malo as they funded this activity for our students. Collaborative work in Mme Sara's 4/5EIn 4/5E, we have been enjoying a lot more collaborative work in our class! We are back in table groups and loving getting to work together across all of the subjects. We have started a new leadership initiative where if a student finishes earlier or if what we are working on is a strength of their’s, they can now circulate and help others! This has been very exciting in ELA, where students have become Research Assistants for others and in Math where they can help teach others with the new concepts we are learning. Maternelle students are adding new and interesting activities to their routine. Field trips are back! Our grade 5 and 6 students have been able to visit the Manitoba Museum this week in Winnipeg. Here, we were able to learn about our province's history by exploring the museum's galleries and participating in a workshop about the Fur Trade. Exploring is fun!
To celebrate Earth Day, we did a fun art/science project! It was really nice to be able to incorporate different subjects into this one little project. The students needed to draw the continents on a coffee filter, then color them green. Then they needed to color all the oceans blue and spray water on them to create a tie-dye effect. The students later learned that the coffee filter is a translucent object which means that some sunlight can pass through it. So when we have sunshine outside, our beautiful Earths shine even brighter! Coding with robotsGrade 7/8 C has been working with robots , using their coding skills to make the robots follow commands. They have coded the robots to launch bouncy balls, play the xylophone and say messages. Grade 8 mental heath walk to the spill wayHaving fun learning with our sensesThe grade 1 and 2 students had fun exploring with their senses. The students had to use their sense of touch to guess what the object in the mystery box was. We also explored different textures, and we made salt -painted Easter eggs. Quel plaisir!!! Neurographic artThe Grades 5-8 students learned about Neurographic Art. It is based on a concept developed by Russian psychologist and creative entrepreneur Pavel Piskarev in 2014. He believed that creative processes engage additional neurons and improve your ability to make decisions. The name is derived from neuro (brain) and (graphic) image. As an art therapy technique, it helps people make connections. Many people find it meditative or relaxing to do. Norval Morriseau inspired bearsMme Sara’s class created Norval Morrisseau inspired bears. They used brightly coloured paper to make organic shapes. They then collaged these shapes onto their black bear silhouette. Noval Morrisseau was an Indigenous Canadian artist from the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation in Ontario. He was a self-taught artist and created artwork based on cultural legends and spirituality that came to him in visions and dreams. His style is instantly recognizable by the bright colors and thick black outlines and is called Eastern Woodlands Art. He signs his artwork under his pen name, Copper Thunderbird, in Cree syllabics. Weaving mini rugs in 7/8Mme Rachael and Mr. Sealy’s classes learned about the history of weaving and also created their own looms during Art class. They chose colours and patterns to create a small rug. Everyone was engaged and successful! Weaving Fun!All the Grade 3/4 students created their own animal out of cardboard. Next they made a loom on the animal. Then they chose yarn colours and started weaving a scarf for their animal! Such creativity and fun had by all! Robots! Robots! Robots!Mme Christine and Mme Sydney’s 1/2 classes made robots using recycled cardboard. We listened to stories, discussed shapes and sizes and created a robot collagraph. A collagraph is a basic method of printmaking using a board with collage materials glued onto it to form a relief surface with a variety of textures. After they created their robot, they used crayons and made a rubbing to reveal their artwork under the paper. They were excited to reveal their creations!! Matisse CollagesMme Rikki’s class learned about Henri Matisse. Matisse was called the “King of Colour”. He recognized that colour played a big part in how we perceive life. Later in life, he became ill and was bed ridden. He still created art in his bed by using a bamboo stick tipped with chalk. He drew on the ceiling! He also started cutting out shapes with scissors and called this art form, “drawing with scissors.” The Grade 1/2s listened to a story about Matisse called Henri’s Scissors. They identified, cut and drew organic shapes from a variety of colours of construction paper. Finally they arranged their shapes to create a Matisse inspired collage. They are so colourful like Matisse! Even M. Gerry approves! Sunshine fund summer camp subsidies

M Shane's class learning through chessStudents have been learning to play chess during Math class. Chess gives students the opportunity to identify patterns, make predictions and develop logic and reasoning skills. They also partake in some healthy competition to develop good sportsmanship. Rikki's k-2 classThe K-2 classroom began centers this week!
