I Love to read month Kick OffThe K-4 students had a special visit from Corny Rempel this week to help us kick off I Love to Read month! Mme. Rikki’s grade 3/4 have been working on mastering the 0, 1, 2, and 5 multiplication tables. This week students were introduced to the 4 times table! Here they are playing Bump It x4. Students in maternelle work on teamwork while enjoying Math games Les élèves de la maternelle travaillent sur le travail d'équipe tout en s'amusant avec des jeux de mathématiques The grade 7&8's in M. Fouasse's class have been working on personal narrative essays. These interesting short stories reveal a theme or lesson and the students must also consider descriptive sentences, strong opening scenes and an interesting way to end the story to connect with the reader. The grade 3/4s are exploring sound this month in science. They investigated how sound moves through air, water, and a solid object this week. They love to put their scientist caps on and do experiments together! There is no school Friday, February 2nd. Winter is definitely upon us and here to stay. With the amount of time students spend outdoors up to 1 1/2 hours per day, it is important that students are appropriately dressed for the cold and the snow. Only during times of extreme cold will recess be held indoors. We strongly recommend early years students have a second pair of mittens or gloves and a second pair of socks, in case their first pair is lost or becomes wet during play time. For middle years students, we strongly recommend a good pair of winter boots as opposed to runners or slip on shoes, a jacket, toque, and either ski pants or additional layers of pants. When temperatures of -28 degrees, with or without windchill, are reached, students will spend their recess/break indoor. This includes during morning arrivals between 8:20 and 8:40. Art-Holiday HighlightsMme Cara sends out a huge Thank You to her Art duo of Ryleigh and Ciara (and friends) for all their help creating beautiful displays in the hallway, cleaning up in the early years’ classrooms, organizing art supplies, and washing paint brushes and containers. These gals work super hard during their recesses and lunch hour to decorate the hallway with students’ artwork that brings joy to all that walk by. Nutcrackers in Grade 3/4The 3/4s in Mme Sydney, Mme Tia, Mme Rikki and Mme Danaka’s class worked on their nutcrackers for over 3 weeks! They looked at a variety of nutcrackers and discussed what features they had in common. Next they drew the basic body and head. Students were then given the freedom to customize their characters from hair, hats, boots and outfits. They then outlined in sharpie and chose a colour scheme to paint their figures. Next they chose a contrasting colour of liquid watercolour for the background in order for their nutcracker to stand out. The final step was to take a tiny paintbrush and outline their drawing to make it “pop”. This was a very fun project and lots of compliments given down the hallway of how amazing they look! Candy Canes and GingerbreadThe Grade 5/6s in Mme Bonnie, Mme Janelle, Mme Danielle and the 6/7s in Mme Jaclyn’s classes all worked with chalk and oil pastels for these projects. Students blended oil pastels and used white highlights to make their paper candy canes jump off the page and look so real. A mixture of glue and white paint was used to draw with “icing” for their gingerbread houses. Students then added pops of colour with chalk pastels to have their candy stand out against the brown gingerbread paper background. Fabulous job and so different and creative! We hope that families have a wonderful Winter Break and a Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing everyone when classes resume on Monday, January 8, 2024.
