SOCIAL MEDIA PERSPECTIVES FROM GRADE 7/8 FBy Mackenzie Coté Recently the grade ⅞ french class has been diving into the topic of social media perspectives and the impacts that social media has had on society, positive and negative. The students viewed a recently released documentary called “The Social Dilemma”, this documentary digs into the tactics and techniques that large companies use to constantly draw the attention of consumers, especially younger generations, that often go unnoticed but play a big part in how these platforms can become addicting to users. It focuses on the psychological parts of advertising and the psychological effects these tactics have on consumers. All of the students in the class have begun to have quite advanced, canny and overall impressive discussions on the matter. If you have access to the documentary I really recommend you watch it as it is very interesting, gives you a whole new perspective and is overall a very informative documentary! Student reflections: The impact of social media on self image. “In reality those expectations (shown on social media) are unrealistic…” “So what if people don’t like how you look…” “It affects self image because they begin to believe they are less without filters….I don’t need someone else’s validation and can reflect on myself personally.” “I kind of wish I was born in the 80’s or 90’s because friends would...actually do stuff together” “It does affect me, last year in alarming ways, then I corrected myself and changed my algorithms....” SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR |
