In January of 2022 Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning introduced the Elders and Knowledge Keepers in Schools Initiative. The initiative was designed to support students, educators, and families to learn First Nations, Métis and Inuit histories, cultures, traditional values, contemporary lifestyles and traditional knowledge systems across all learning environments through authentic engagement; one of the four policy directives articulated in Mamàhtawisiwin - The Wonder We Are Born With; An Indigenous Education Policy Framework. Students have the opportunity to participate in and learn about cultural teachings, experiences and Indigenous languages. Elders and Knowledge Keepers in schools support development and delivery of Indigenous worldviews by sharing traditional knowledge, teaching practices and protocols to enhance the connection between families and schools. They also provide support to create a culture of understanding and respect in our communities. The Red River Valley School Division is excited to announce that Knowledge Keeper Glenna Henderson, introduced to the students as “Cookem Daisey” has committed to a relationship with our division and will be working in partnership with our schools and communities. Cookem Daisey is an accomplished entrepreneur, Knowledge Keeper, and former casino industry professional. Cookem Daisey is a proud member of Sagkeeng First Nation in Treaty 1 Territory, (Anishinaabe) and from Peepeekisis First Nations, ( Nehiyaw Iskwewak - Cree woman) who was adopted by her Uncle and Metis Aunt and raised in Winnipeg.
