We wish to acknowledge and thank our families for their ongoing collaboration, commitment and support in working as partners with the school for the success of all of our students. We wish you all a fantastic summer break and look forward to seeing you in September!! To help ease transitions for students and familiarize them with new a setting and staff, on Thursday, students had a chance to visit their next year classrooms and meet their new teacher and classmates. Many things are taken into consideration when creating new classroom groupings. At all times, decisions are based on students best interests. Some considerations given are, but not limited to, the following: Siblings & family connections (student/student, student/staff), academics needs, social-emotional needs, peer relationships, peer & class dynamics, student maturity, class size, classroom teacher best fit. Dan and Golf Manitoba for organizing this! The Grade 7/8 English program students have done such a great job building their garden boxes at Epic! robot fun in mme rikki's classTo go along with their class read aloud The Wild Robot series, students created robot collagraphs out of recycled materials. Then they used crayons and foil to make prints with them. Each one is unique with its own personality. Cicadas, Underground Pipes and Planets in Mme Katrina’s ClassThe Grade 3/4s tied in Science and ongoing construction to Art this term. They first made symmetrical cicadas using pastel, paint and wax paper for the wings. Next they created underground pipes and used chalk pastel to give an implied value and 3-D look to their pictures. Lastly, the students used circle tracers, blended pastels and paint splatter to create their own galaxies. Des Fleurs et des Papillons in Mme Christine’s Class This mixed media project combines several different painting and printmaking techniques to create texture and interest; string pull painting, subtractive foam printing, as well as sponge painting. These turned out so beautifully! Eggs in the Nest in Mme Katie and Mme Sydney’s ClassThe Grade 1/2s looked at a variety of nests birds make and how they are made. They were focusing on shapes and texture as they built up their bird nest. The final touch was adding birds eggs and feathers to their collages. Derek Gores Magazine Collages/Kimmy Cantrell Masks in M. Fouasse and Mme Ally’s ClassThe Grade 7/8s created Derek Gores inspired collages, where they chose an object to highlight with a contrasting background using ripped pieces of magazine. They also created Kimmy Cantrell abstract masks with cardboard where they used colour and shape to add emotion. Abstract Art Cardboard Collages in Mme Bonnie and Mme Kristyn’s Class The Grade 5/6s first cut and painted pieces of cardboard. Next they assembled them on a cardboard base to create an individual or collaborative piece of abstract art. The results are stunning! The staff at ÉSMS would like to thank the ÉSMS PAC for organizing a pizza lunch for all the staff members this past Thursday. It was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by staff! P is for pajama day! Students in Mme. Rikki's class cozied up to a friend with a good book. We’ve had fun doing field trips at the end of year! It was a wonderful performance! This week, Grade 5/6 had the opportunity to meet with our Maternelle buddies and read, craft and play together!Seeley's Grade 7 and 8s had a busy couple of weeks!Students built raised garden beds with Epic SMILE of St. Malo Inc., a non profit organization that is committed to advocate and promote inclusion in the community. Students also learnt how to measure the area/circumference of circles and the area and perimeter of squares and rectangles in math. Last week they played softball at Lowe Farm School where our boys finished 2nd and the girls placed 1st in the division. Robots with Mme BonnieNous développons notre design thinking en créant des parcours d’obstacles pour nos robots. ABC countdown!F is for Fruit Salad. K/M and 1/2E brought in fruit and enjoyed a big bowl of fruit salad. 3/4F Explore different soilsIn 3-4F, we have been studying different soil and its uses. We took our curiosity outside and looked at the different soil around the school yard. We compared the dirt from the planters, from the sandbox and around the fence. We looked at what was found within and what could grow in it. Up next we will be planting our own flowers to see what they need to grow! Solids, liquids and gases in 1/2FIn Science we've been learning about solids, liquids and gases. To finish off this unit we learned about buoyancy. We created our own boats using recycled materials. After we tested them out to see if they were able to hold a given mass/weight. We’ve also been enjoying a new game in our class. We have repurposed the game Headbanz as a way to practice our sight words and sounds! 2D and 3d shapes with mme allyWe have been working with circles, triangles and other 2D and 3D shapes in our classroom. As an activity, students were asked to make a cubee character. This is a 2D shape that needs to be cut and transformed into a 3D character. As you can see, many favourite characters occurred, and students independently collaborated to create a theme (go teenage mutant ninja turtles!). Finally, students were asked to write a brief description of why they chose this character. Fun ways to incorporate core subjects into an enjoyable time! Mme. Rikki's Grade 3&4 class are exploring Living in Manitoba and Manitoba History in Social Studies class. Under Construction in Mme Katie's roomKinetic ArtMme Rikki and Mme Katrina’s class incorporated Science and study of magnets with Art. They learned about Kinetic Art and that it is a type of art that depends on movement to create an effect. They each designed a skater and painted a whimsical background. Using a paperclip and a magnet, they were able to make their person skate on the pond! Very cool! Weaving in 7/8Candy Shoes/MarblesMme Ally’s class each chose a shoe to learn how to draw. Next they picked their favourite candy/chocolate to use as inspiration for their shoe colour scheme and design. They also observed and painted marbles. They used chalk pastel to demonstrate their knowledge of light to create a realistic reflection of their marbles. citrus up closeMme Rikki's class put their observation skills to great work as they were learning about value and shape. Each student chose a citrus fruit to draw up close. Then they only used one colour and white to show different values of that colour to represent their fruit. Then they painted the background with a complimentary colour to make it "pop"! food trucks and donuts galore! All 3 Grade 5/6 classes learned about graphic design. They created a logo and made a food truck to match their product. They also made 3-D donuts from newspaper, toilet paper, paint and a shaving cream/glue icing. They are all very unique and should be proud of their hard work.
